Lawrenceburg is a town in Logan County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,972 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Logan County. Lawrenceburg was founded by three men in 1831: John C. Greer, James W. Earp, and Benjamin Fenton. The first courthouse in Lawrenceburg was built in 1835 and served as the county seat until 1857 when it became the town center. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and (1%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,824 people, 611 households, and 498 families residing in the town. The population density was 563 people per square mile (233/km²). There were 784 housing units at an average density of 292/sq mi (120/km²). Lawrenceburg is a small town located in Pike County, Kentucky. The community was founded in 1872 by Colonel John A. Smith and his wife, Virginia. The name of the town was changed to Lawrenceburg after General George Custer's death in 1887. The population of the town decreased from its peak in 1910 to its current size of just over 1,000 people in 2000. The first buildings were built on what is now the east side of Main Street. On April 15, 1872, Lawrenceburg became the temporary seat of government for Pike County when Judge David Wills resigned his seat on the bench at Frankfort because he objected to being elected without a vote from all of his constituents. At that time, there were only three residents living in the community: Colonel John A. Smith (the founder), Mrs. Smith (Virginia), and Captain Fenton Robinson (a member of Company K). In 1874, a post office was established at Lawrenceburg and it remained in operation until 1907 when it was moved to Paducah. In 1888, General George Custer died at Fort Recovery south of Lawerenceburg and the town began to grow rapidly as people started coming to see General Custer's gravestone which had been erected nearby since his death many years earlier. In 1910, the population of Lawrenceburg reached 2,500 people but decreased quickly due to World War I and then II which interrupted trade between America and Europe so much that few goods arrived into Lawrenceburg during those timescales. In 2000, there were just over 1,000 people living inLawrenceburg with most residents working within commuting distance from their homes or businesses outside of town limits. The economy around here has always been based upon agriculture; however since 2001 we have seen some growth through construction jobs along with service jobs such as restaurant work for ladies who need help getting ready for dinner; this type job can bring income right up into $50-100 per hour depending on location! With so much industry happening throughout this area these days it really cannot be said that they have any real "community" feel other than maybe some friendly greetings when passing by if you know anyone who lives thereabouts! But overall everyone seems pretty business-oriented these days...or maybe they are just used to having so little interaction with others? It really doesn't bother me too much though...I guess I'm just realistic ;)
