Lawrenceburg is a small town in Butler County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. Lawrenceburg is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The settlement of Lawrenceburg was founded in 1821 by General James Wilkinson and his brother-in-law, Colonel Elijah Denny. The early settlers were primarily farmers who raised corn, wheat and other crops on their own land. In 1827, the legislature renamed the town after General Anthony Wayne who had died that year in a skirmish with Native Americans near Mount Sterling. In 1829, Wilkinson's son Isaac married Rachelle Minor and began to farm more land around Lawrenceburg. They raised two children there: Isaac (1830–1906) and Margaret (1832–1910). Around this time, also, local residents built a log cabin known as "The Old Mill". It is now used as a museum. In 1841, General Robert Ewell took control of Confederate forces during the American Civil War and made Lawrenceburg his headquarters for several months while he raided Union settlements in eastern Kentucky. He then relocated his command to Pikeville when he realized that Lexington was defended by Union forces under Major general Stoneman instead of Confederate Lieutenant colonel Thomas Jourdan like he had hoped for. After the war ended in 1865, many Lawrenceburg residents migrated to Indiana or Ohio because of Reconstruction policies which ended slavery in America but not before many African Americans were forced into labor such as cotton picking or coal mining across much of central Kentucky following Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865. Many slaves who remained became refugees after being free but they too lost their homes and businesses along with their families when Lincoln's new Ulysses S Grant Administration came into power two years later with an all-black cabinet including former slaveholder John Blair Elkins as Secretary Of State – effectively ending Reconstruction nationwide though some black men continued to serve in high positions throughout much of America until well into the 21st century including current president Barack Obama (born white). 1/3rds of all adults living within one mile of US Capital during Reconstruction were black men; most freedmen settled near Rolla or Lebanon KY due to lack of housing & transportation available closer to major cities
