Lawrenceburg is a town in Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,818 at the 2010 census. It is the County seat of Fayette County. The first settler in Lawrenceburg was John Crouch who arrived in 1792. He and his family were among the earliest permanent settlers in what would become Fayette County. In 1814, Colonel James Wilkinson donated land to the town for its purposes. The first store opened its doors in 1815 and it continued to be one of the most important businesses in town until 1938 when it closed its doors due to economic reasons. In 1820, General Nicholas Hanks laid out a system of streets that still exists today as part of Main Street which ran through the heart of downtown Lawrenceburg. This street system made shopping and business transactions much easier and faster than they are now with all of those houses on either side of Main Street making it difficult for pedestrians or cyclists to get around without getting lost or stopped by traffic lights! In 1830, Reverend Ezra Stroud founded Mount Zion Baptist Church located on present day Elmwood Avenue which remains one of the most prominent religious institutions in Lawrenceburg today. Reverend Stroud served as pastor from 1830-1836 and then again from 1840-1846 before moving his church to Louisville where he died in 1865 after many years serving his congregation there at an age 80 years old! That same year also saw another significant event when Dr Samuel Witherspoon became the first physician ever appointed by Governor Daniel Boone to practice medicine within Fayette County! Dr Witherspoon had a large career both medically and politically up until his death just over two decades later due to complications from tuberculosis!). It wasn't until 1861 that a post office called Lawrenceburg was established with David Burch as its firstpostmaster! The community gradually grew larger and more active during this time with several stores, two churches (Mount Zion Baptist & Presbyterian), schools (the original Taney School building built in 1834 remains operational today), Masonic Lodge #2 (founded in 1875), telephone company (the very first telephone service available within Fayette County!), hospital (Fayetteville Hospital builtin 1904) and even an amusement park known as Eastern Park which opened its gates on July 1st 1909 thanks to $5,000 raised by local citizens!! After World War II endedustermuch like many other rural towns throughout America fell into disrepair; however, things beganto turnaround somewhat onceagain after Aidan Donohue took over as Mayor/Clerk/Trustee/ Director of Community Development back on January 1st 1966! In 1978Lawrenceburg submitted plans for annexation by neighboring cityof Lebanon but because no votes were taken nor objections filed no annexation occurred; instead, residents voted not To Annex their Town & retain their own government!!! TodayLebanon boasts their own version of Main Street complete withowntown shopping mall plus excellent restaurants & nightlife options while employment opportunities abound for all ages including recent graduates working single mommy jobs!)
