Lawrenceburg is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. It is the principal city of the Lawrenceburg-Thornberry Micropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of 87,671 as of the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1814 and named for General David Wilkinson.Lawrenceburg is located on the west bank of the Susquehanna River opposite Thornberry and about halfway between Dayton and Clarksville. The first permanent settler in what would become Lawrenceburg was Colonel John Smeaton who arrived in 1798 from Connecticut with his family. He built a log cabin on Bald Eagle Creek near present day US-27 and erected a small fortification to protect his territory against nearby Indian tribes. In 1800, Colonel Smeaton married into one of the most prominent families in eastern Kentucky: Mrs. Martha Washington Dodge (1754-1834), daughter of General James Ford Dodge (1724-1800). The Dokets were settlers at Fort Knox before moving to Cincinnati where they became wealthy merchants and political leaders under President James K. Polk during the American Civil War (1861-1865).Mrs. Martha Washington Dodge died young while pregnant with their only child, John Fenton Dodge Jr., who would later become president of Kentucky's Commonwealth University (1912-1923). MrSometime after Captain Ebenezer Richardson's arrival from Maryland around 1813, he erected an early frame house on what is now Main Street in Lawrenceburg which served as court house until 1820 when that structure burned down; it was replaced by an early post office building which still stands today on Fourth Street across from First Baptist Church (later known as All Saints Episcopal Church) . Captain Richardson's house stood until 1840 when it also burned down but was replaced by another early frame house which still stands today on Third Street across from Gentry Cemetery; this structure served as court house until 1830 when that building also burned down due to weather conditions caused by severe thunderstorms that week .Captain Ebenezer Richardson moved his family back to America around 1825 when he sailed upriver landing atpresent day US-27 bridge over Susquehanna River just downstream from where he had first landed about four years earlier; he began logging operations along river’s edge soon thereafterFamilies such as Captain Richardson helped contribute greatly to development of central Hardin County during its earliest yearsA number of other pioneer landowners followed suit over time including Captains Daniel Boone(1775-[1850]), Major Elijah McCoy(1776-[1841]), Isaac Brock(1780-[1851])and Solomon Granger(1800-[1857]).
