Lawrenceburg was founded in 1785 by Captain James Caldwell and his wife, Esther. The Caldwells were the first white settlers in what is now Kentucky. Captain Caldwell named the town after himself, Lawrenceburg (blessed be he). In 1812, General James K. Polk decided to move the seat of government from Louisville to Lexington because of its strategic location on the Ohio River. General John C. Fremont also moved the seat of government to Lexington in 1839 because it was more centrally located and had a better view of the capital city. The town's economy changed significantly during World War II when Lawrenceburg became home to two military airfields: Arnold Field and Whiteman Air Force Base. With these bases came new jobs for local residents and businesses which helped contribute to the town's growth over the years. Today, Lawrenceburg is a thriving community with a wide variety of businesses and services available both within and outside its walls.
