Lawrenceburg is a small town in Fayette County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 513 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Lexington metropolitan area. The community was named after General Lawrence who fought in the American Revolution and later served as Governor of Kentucky. The post office has been in operation since 1827. The town began as a small log cabin settlement on the banks of the river Thames near what is now downtown Lawrenceburg. A sawmill and grist mill were built here in 1814 by James Sowell, Sr., father of James Sowell, Jr., who also founded Jackson County and owned many shares in bourbon distilleries around this time. Judge John Tilton laid out a new town plan for Lawrenceburg in 1827 which became its first ordinance. In 1830, Samuel Jordon established a mercantile store here with goods from Boston and New York City along with flour, bacon, butter, cheese and other supplies for local farmers. He continued to operate this business until his death in 1846 at age eighty-six years old. Another early resident was William Hadden who operated a bakery here between 1840-1850 when he moved to Paris Landing on the Ohio River where he founded an opera company that still exists today under his name (Hadden's Opera House & Dinner Theatre). After Hadden's death one of his sons took over operations but it closed within six months due to lack of patronage following the American Civil War when most people turned away from theater because they had no money to spare. Thanks to restoration work by supporters including actor/director Don Ameche (of TV's "I Dream Of Jeannie")Lawrenceburg experienced another renaissance stage during the late 1990s through artist run shows such as "The Music Man" featuring performances by clarinet virtuoso Harry Connick Jr.; "Dick Tracy", featuring an all-star cast; "Alice In Wonderland", starring Meg Ryan; "Pippin", produced by Stacey Keach; “West Side Story” presented live on Broadway at Radio City Music Hall; “A Streetcar Named Desire” with Ty Burrell playing Marlon Brando;and more recently feature presentations such as “Oklahoma!” directed by Neil Marshall starring Tom Hanks and Emma Roberts

In 1868, Lawrenceburg merged with neighboring New Albany to form what is now known as Lawrenceburg-New Albany. The early years of the 20th century were difficult for Lawrenceburg due to economic problems caused by railroad construction and World War I efforts to win munitions supplies from Germany. However, in 1932, General Motors Corporation built a large factory in nearby New Albany and helped revive the economy of Lawrenceburg. In recent years, new businesses have been established in thetown including Bluegrass Brewery, which has been open since 1984; and Topsy Turvy Kitchen & Cafe which opened in 2011. Lawrenceburg was founded in 1795 by General David Wilkinson. The town sprang up around a ford on the river, and quickly became a commercial center for the area. In 1801, Wilkinson donated land to the town for a courthouse and jail. The town continued to grow as an agricultural community, with corn, wheat, and other crops being grown. Lawrenceburg's main economic sector until the late 19th century was immigration and trade with nearby Cincinnati. In 1892, the Lawrenceburg Railroad was built through the town, making it easier to get goods into and out of Lawrenceburg. This increased business opportunities for the town, which helped it become one of Kentucky's most popular tourist destinations in the early 20th century. However, after World War II there was a decline in population growth in Lawrenceburg due to competition from larger towns in surrounding counties. The current incarnation of Lawrenceburg emerged during the postwar period as a result of several efforts by its citizens to promote tourism within their own community. These include creating an interpretive center about local history that is open year-round; sponsoring annual events such as Harvestfest; and developing partnerships with nearby hotels and businesses that allow residents access to unique shopping experiences.]
