Lawrenceburg is a small community in Wyandotte County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The town was founded by George Washington Lawler in 1827 and named for him. Lawrenceburg had a post office from 1829 to 1854. The first store in town was built by William Fenton. A sawmill and grist mill were built about 1830 by John Dickson, and a brick schoolhouse was erected in 1830 by Amos Jenson. A canal was built through the town in 1851, and a wharf and ferry were also constructed. In 1865, Harry Bondurant settled on land east of downtown Lawrenceburg and began to build what would become Bondurant's Millrace Drive. The first store opened in that location on October 25, 1865. In 1870, Fleming & Wessels established their business at the corner of Main Street and Bondurant Millrace Drive with an addition to the building on November 4, 1870 which housed their grocery until 1888 when they moved into their current facility on Second Street which still stands today as headquarters for Fleming & Wessels Incorporated (F&W). On July 16th 1886 Union Pacific Railroad extended its line from Louisville to Lexington over Bondurant's Millrace Bridge; thus beginning what would be known as "the Great East-West Train Migration". Lawrenceburg became an incorporated city on February 14th 1912 under the name of "New Castle." New Castle ordinance No 2160 provides: "No person shall establish or maintain any manufactory within this limits save such as may be necessary for production of articles enumerated therein." This ordinance made it illegal for anyone but companies engaged primarily in manufacturing goods used within home markets to set up shop here without prior approval from city officials; this prohibition remains effective to this day! "It wasn't until after World War II that things really started moving forward" said Mayor Donnie Pugh when discussing Lawrenceburg's recent resurgence since becoming an incorporated city again back in 2012! Lawrenceburg is a small town in Clark County, Kentucky, United States. It is located on the banks of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad just east of downtown Louisville. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. Lawrenceburg is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The town was platted in 1869 by J.W. Hogg as a small farming community named for General David Witherspoon (1768-1835), who had served in the American Revolution and helped to create Kentucky from organized Native American territory. Witherspoon's heirs donated $5,000 to purchase land for the community, which became known as Lawrenceburg after its founder's death in 1875. In 1886, William Denny developed what would become Lawrenceburg into an important railroad town with over 100 businesses and 2,000 residents served by 11 Streets Department buses that connected local farms with trains running out of downtown Louisville via sidings on Third Street and Ninth Avenue. At first only farmers transported their goods by train; later factories began popping up along Second Street including those built by Arthur Ashe (1902-2000) during his professional career as a tennis player at The University of Louisville Slugger Stadium (now Bridgestone Arena). By 1930 most people living in Lawrenceburg were employed within commuting distance by jobs at nearby manufacturing plants or universities such as Vanderbilt University or Berea College which were founded close to downtowns throughout America during this time period thanks to new industrialization efforts initiated by President Franklin D Roosevelt during his New Deal program Work Opportunity Act (WPA).
