It was a small shop called “The PostBoy” and it served as both a place to buy and sell firearms, as well as publish local news. In 1868, when the city of Lawrenceburg was founded, there were only six stores left in town after The PostBoy closed its doors. However, over time, gun magazines grew larger and more popular in the city. In 1924, The Gilded Cage Magazine Company was founded in Lawrenceburg and quickly became one of the most popular gun magazine publishers in America. They published magazines like American Rifleman, Sporting News, Shooter & Tracker and many others until their closure in 1978. Lawrenceburg is a small community in central Kentucky, located on the banks of the river Thames. The town was founded in 1869 by General John C. Fremont, who named it after his birthplace, Lawrenceburg, Virginia. The population of Lawrenceburg was 710 at the 2000 census. The town was originally settled as part of a larger area which included present-day West Liberty and Hazard Counties. In 1869, General John C. Fremont surveyed the area and named it Lawrenceburg after his home state of Virginia. The first buildings were erected in the town in 1870-71 and the first store opened for business in 1872. By 1880, Lawrenceburg had developed into a busy commercial center with a variety of businesses including several banks and several stores. lawrenceburghky public library In 1902, local farmers formed a cooperative to purchase land along the river Thames for agricultural purposes. They named their new venture “The Lancaster Cooperative” and began operations that year. In 1907, they purchased an additional acreage east of their original farm site and continued growing crops until World War II when they transitioned to raising livestock for market trade purposes only. During World War II, many Lawrenceburgh residents served in military units such as the Ulysses S Grant Brigade (1918-19), 133rd Infantry Regiment (1944), 307th Infantry Regiment (1945) and 8ieth Infantry Division (1945). After hostilities ended, many people returned to their farming practices while others took up other economic opportunities throughout Kentucky during this time period; however, some members of The Lancaster Cooperative continue to operate today as an agricultural marketing cooperative known as “The Holland Co-Op”
