The first mayor of Lawrenceburg was James Denny who served from 1829-1830. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln made an appearance inLawrenceburg when he delivered a speech there before traveling to Huntington for his inauguration ceremony. In 1922, Lawrenceburghs name changed to "Lawrenceburgh" in honor of General George Washington Carver who had donated land for the city. In 1955-1956, during the American Civil Rights Movement, many African Americans worked at local plantations near Lawrencesville while also protesting against white supremacy through protests and boycotts throughout Johnson County. Some significant events related to this time include: Stonewall Jackson's funeral procession which passed through Lawrencesville on July 14th; Attorney General Ramsey Clark's appearance before the United States Senate regarding desegregation Alabama School District No 8; integration of Central High School into Lyndon BJohnson Junior College; and Robert F Kennedy being assassinated outside Chappaquiddick Lodge #5 in Hyannis Port on November 15th
