Many residents in Lawrenceburg had been stocking up on firearms since before the war began, so it wasn’t until after their state had seceded from the United States that people started wearing T-shirts with slogans such as “Remember Lexington” or “Kentucky First” on them. The Lawrenceburg Armory, also known as the Butler Arms Armory, was built in 1881 by J.P. Butler and is still active today. It is home to the Kentucky Rifle Association's (KRA) headquarters and has been used for many gun shows and events over the years.
Lawrenceburg is a small town in central Kentucky, located on the Cumberland River. The population was 5,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1815 by General John Covington and named for him. In 1876, it became the home of the first organized Baptist church in eastern Kentucky. Lawrenceburg has two high schools - Central High School and Liberty High School - as well as four elementary schools: Cedarwood Elementary, First Presbyterian Elementary, Second Presbyterian Elementary, and Third Presbyterian Elementary. There are also several private schools in Lawrenceburg: Parkview Preparatory School and Bellefontaine Academy are both within Central High School; Onyx Christian Academy is located off I-75 near downtown; Hillcrest MiddleSchool is also adjacent to Central High School; and Meade Valley Jr./Sr., Inc., which serves students from west of Lexington along US 421/SR 606 east of Bellefontaine Academy (just south of the city limits).

Lawrenceburg was first settled in 1825 by James and Nancy McLaughlin. The town began to grow rapidly after the discovery of coal near present-day Clarksville, Kentucky. In 1845, the McLaughlin family donated land for the erection of a courthouse and jail in Lawrenceburg. By 1860, the population of Lawrenceburg had reached 1,600 people. The town continued to grow as a result of its strategic location on the water resources of the Cumberland River and its access to transportation thorough Clarksville and Louisville. The growth of Lawrenceburg led to problems in 1865 when two men were killed while working on a railroad project through town. This event quickly escalated into an all-out conflict between local residents and county authorities over who should have control over the roads and resources within their boundaries. Eventually, law enforcement became involved and hostilities subsided. In 1875, following heavy investment by John Denny in coalmining operations in Clay County, Lawrenceburg experienced another boom period thanks to new merchandizing techniques developed by Denny’s brother-in-law, George Stephenson. From this point forward, Lawrenceburg grew increasingly diversified – becoming known for its leather products (particularly shoes), cotton textiles (such as pajamas), cheese (), beer (), apples (), whiskey (), izzy () drinks (), iced tea ())], timber ()], potatoes ()], eggs (). But despite these successes, economic decline set in during the late 1800s due largely to factors such as increased competition from other towns in Clay County as well as natural gas discoveries around Louisville2 *. With less income coming into town from outside sources and fewer jobs available for locals outside of manufacturing or services sector businesses3*, it is no wonder that many residents Abandoned Lawrenceburg4*. By 1930*, only about 50% of original inhabitants remained5*. However* due to efforts by local officials6* (*see footnote 2), there has been recent resurgence *since 20007* (*see footnote 3) with current populations numbering close to 3008*.
Lawrenceburg was founded in 1812 by Colonel John Law, and became a town in 1838. The town's population grew to about 2,500 people by 1840. Lawrenceburg was the site of a Union Army encampment during the American Civil War. In 1865, the town was merged with neighboring Tellico City into the new city of Lawrenceburg.
