The first permanent settler in what is now Lawrenceburg was James A. Buchanan in 1818. He and his family (his wife Sarah, four children James, John and Ruth) moved from Massachusetts to this area about two miles east of present-day downtown Lawrenceburg. One of the early businesses in downtown Lawrenceburg was the store of Wm Blythe & Son which operated for many years until it burned down in 1915. Lawrenceburg began as a manufacturing center with textiles being some of its most prominent businesses before becoming an agricultural center with heavy production of hay, potatoes and other vegetables during the post-war period. Some major employers throughout its history include: Paine-Robbins Machine & Tool Company; Beecham Brick Works; Rankin Paper Mill; H&M Clothing Store; Briggs Meat Market.; Keystone Paper Company.; Lackawanna Coal Co.; Donelson Mfg., Incorporated.; Hopkins Rubber company;; etc. In recent years there has been significant development taking place within and around downtown Lawrenceburg including: a new public library built on Main Street adjacent to the former Rankin Paper Mill complex (now home to several restaurants%); new housing developments nearby such as theformer Donelson Mfg., Incorporated factory site that has seen several residential buildings erected since 2006; a large retail plaza stretching across Front Street between Main and Second Streets that saw construction beginning in late 2017 featuring approximately 150 retailers including Walmart, JCPenney, Macy's Department Stores and Sears Holdings); a number of new businesses have opened up near or inside Downtown Lawrenceburg park including Dare Devil BBQ restaurant/barbecue stand (opened in fall 2017), Lighthouse Brewing Company (announced opening summer 2018), Black Diamond Pizza Place (opening Fall 2018) and more TBA soon!

Lawrenceburg is a boomtown that has seen increases in business and population since the 1990s. It is home to two universities, WesternKentucky University and Bard College, as well as many professional businesses and services. The first settlers to Lawrenceburg were farmers who arrived from Virginia in 1821. They built log cabin homes on the present site of the city in 1859. The initial growth of Lawrenceburg was due to its natural resources: coal, iron ore, oil shale, and wheat fields. Businesses began to develop around this time: a sawmill opened up around 1860, while a hotel and grocery store were built shortly after that. Coal mining started operations starting in 1865; it became one of Lawrenceburg’s most important industries until the late 20th century. In addition to its primary economic activity, Lawrenceburg also served as a political center during the 19th century; both state legislators (under James Hammond) and federal representatives (Under Salmon Pusey) lived here during this time period. In 2007-2008, downtown Lawrenceburg underwent extensive renovations which included new buildings such as an art museum/gallery which replaced an aging school building dating back to 1888; restaurant/bar complexes including Mr B’s Tavern & Grill (now called First American Place), Hooterslicensee BBQ & Grille CLOSED for remodeling - now known as Jack Daniels Pub; 2 large retail properties totaling over 100 thousand sq ft each [one being housed within a former bank building]; 4 residential buildings totaling over 50 thousand sq ft each [2 bedrooms + 2 bathrooms]; 3 commercial properties totaling over 10 thousand sq ft each [3 restaurants + 1 small store]; 5 tourist spots totaling over 8 hundred dollars per day (+1 shuttle service); total renovation cost= $36 million
