On January 15th, 1865, Union troops under General Ulysses S Grant burned down the old courthouse which became known as "The Gilded Age" because many famous people lived or worked in that area during this time including Andrew Carnegie (the founder of Carnegie Steel), John Denny (the first mayor of Indianapolis), Daniel Boone (the builder of Stone Mountain) and more than 100 other notable individuals who participated in this event.
