In 1881, a group of businessmen in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky organized the BB gun Club. The purpose of the club was to promote and distribute firearms to people who were unable or unwilling to purchase them from others. The club initially distributed guns through correspondence courses and demonstrations. By 1886, the BB gun club had imported over 2,000 pistols from England. In 1902, the Gun Owners' League was founded in Lawrenceburg and began to campaign for laws prohibiting the sale of handguns without a license. In 1911, Governor John Welsh Fletcher vetoed a bill that would have levied an excise tax on handguns. The Gun Owners' League then campaigned against Fletcher's re-election campaign and he lost by a wide margin. The repeal of Prohibition in 1933 led to increased demand for handguns in Kentucky. As a result, the BB gun club disbanded and most of its assets were sold off in 1935. However, some members still continued to distribute guns through their personal connections until after World War II when ownership rights reverted back to those who had bought them before prohibition ended
