Lawrenceburg was founded on November 15, 1801 by John Lawrence and his brother-in-law James Ladd. The town was named for General George Washington's birthplace and home in Virginia. The first store in Lawrenceburg opened in 1802. By 1814, the town had a flour mill and three stores. In 1840, the first bank in Lawrenceburg was built and served as owner/manager until it closed its doors in 1907. In 1861, a dam was built to create the current reservoir that forms much of downtown Lawrenceburg today. The community began to grow rapidly after this addition to its infrastructure but faced economic challenges such as low birthrates and high poverty rates until recent times when many businesses have closed or been acquired by larger companies. In 1935, lawrenceburghs library system became one ofKYLNETs systems following state approval of a bond issue for that purpose; however library service has been limited since then due to budgetary constraints caused by various cuts made to public education throughout KYLNET statewide since then (including Butters Creek Community Library which amalgamated with KYLNET effective July 1st). Today, much of downtown Lawrenceburg is composed ofHebrew Congregation Beth Elohim's Old Synagogue including their historic main building on Main Street which houses an exhibit about early Jews from around the world who visited America during the 1800s; also housed inside are several other interesting exhibits about Jewish life in America over time at different locations around Lexington/Fayette County including: an exhibit about kosher food production history at Eastern Market located just north of downtown; an exhibit about pioneer women farmers from centralKentucky housed within 5Homes development located east off I-65 near exit 20); another display illustrating how Western meat processing operations were developed adjacent to Eastern Market; as well as numerous smaller displays showcasing local historical significance within Lexington/Fayette County specifically pertaining to Judaism including: 4DDisplay - A unique 3D digital display system featuring more than 150 Judaica items available for purchase through interactive kiosks throughout greater Lexington]; among other things displaying artifacts related specific to synagogue services (e.g., shofar lighters used during services) while also providing programming opportunities for children age six months old through eighteen years old who participate in weekday morning Torah classes taught by Rabbi Driscoll supported by volunteer educators from surrounding jurisdictions; along withMakerSpace - A Maker&Taker space open Monday thru Friday 9am-5pm where creative individuals can work on making things using tools they find around their homes or neighborhoods without having any prior experience or skill sets required!
