Lawrenceburg is a small town located in the Kentucky mountains, about 25 miles north of Louisville. It was founded in 1814 by General David Dixon and named for him. Lawrenceburg has a population of about 4,000 people. The town is home to one of the country's only universities, Bard College. The area that would eventually become Lawrenceburg was first settled by two groups of Native Americans, the Iroquois and the Shawnees. In 1814, General David Dixon and his army invaded Indian Territory and came across a group of Shawnees living near what is now Lawrenceburg. General Dixon thought they were Indians and didn't want them around because he knew they could be use as cannon fodder against his own troops. He renamed the area "Lawrenceburg" after himself. In 1870, when railroads were built through central Kentucky, Lawrenceburg became an important stop on the network. Many farmers started arrive here to buy land along the tracks, which made it easier for them to sell their products statewide. Today, much of what makes up downtown Lawrenceburg was built during this time: The Post Office building (which still stands), Trustee's Building (now occupied by the KFC restaurant), local banks and businesses including Butchers' Hall (now used as a community center), court house/ jail/elk farm barns etc., as well as many houses from early 19th centuryen times are still standing in downtown Lawrenceburg today!

The community was founded by Major General John C. Shelby in 1814 as a command post for his military campaigns against Native American tribes in what is now Campbell County. He named it after himself and himself only and erected a log cabin here as the first permanent settler's home. A post office called Lawrenceburg was established in 1837, and remained in operation until 1906. Lawrenceburg experienced significant growth during the late 19th century; its population peaked at 2,812 in 1910. However, during the Great Depression there were large waves of migration to other cities due to economic hardships. The population declined rapidly thereafter, reaching 922 by 2000. Today, Lawrenceburg remains an agricultural center with a handful of businesses providing services to its residents; the most notable being an animal feed store which has been open for over 100 years
