Jeffersontown is a small town in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, located in the immediate vicinity of Elizabethtown. It was founded in 1786 by Captain James Jefferys and his family. The town became an important center for gunsmithing and trade in early Kentucky. In 1827, Colonel John Brown established a military academy here which continue to provide instruction to this day. The first guns ever made in Jeffersontown were projectiles used by the local militia during the American Revolution. After America's independence, many Armsmiths and Gunmakers moved to Kentucky from England because of the low cost of living and good production opportunities available here. One such individual was William Aiken who created a company called "Aiken & Sons" near Elizabethtown in 1830. In 1865, General Robert Ewell decided to move his headquarters from Winchester, Virginia to Lexington so that he could better supervise operations throughout central Kentucky as well as southeastern Tennessee during the Civil War. As a result, much of what is now Jeffersontown was developed around Ewell's new headquarters location - including streets named after him (Ewell Street, Ewing Street etc.). During World War II many industries such as munitions manufacturing produced materials for use on battlefields all over Japan; however, few references are extant other than anecdotal evidence about how guns were manufactured or produced here (e.g., rifle stocks being made from hickory). However when war ended there were only a few buildings left standing with most factories having been destroyed or converted into housing units at that time(1948). Unfortunately relocation plans for these weapons-producing plants never materialized which led to jobs going unfilled until recently when several companies relocated back home(1998-2003).
