Jeffersontown is a small town in Butler County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,728 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. Jeffersontown was founded in 1796 by Captain John Jefferys and his wife Hannah. The first school was built on what is now the corner of Main and Elm Streets. In 1856, Captain John's son-in-law James Waddell donated land to build a public square in Jeffersontown. This square became known as Waddell Square after James Waddell's death in 1865. The first shooting range in Jeffersontown was established in 1912 by Major General Samuel Colt and Colonel George Armstrong with assistance from President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1941, the United States military established a command post for artillery officers at what is now Grandview Boulevard and North First Street inJeffersontown.
