Jeffersontown is a small town in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 5,695 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette metropolitan area. The first rifle stock in Jeffersontown was built by Samuel Gregg in 1820. Rifle stocks continued to be made here until the early 20th century. Jeffersontown's rifle production stopped during World War I because of prohibitive costs associated with new technology and munitions development. In 1927, local gunsmiths began to produce rifles using a modern design called the “Patriots” Action System (PAS). This system allowed for more consistent accuracy and designed to reduce recoil. When World War II started, many American manufacturers decided to go off-shore for military production because of wartime demands. Because of this decision, Jeffersontown lost its share of rifle production but continued to be a major center for shotgun manufacturing until the early 1990s when that industry also ceased operations due to technological advancements and competition from other states. The community rapidly grew due to its location on the Cumberland River and its easy access to freight and trade routes. By 1828, Jeffersontown had a post office, a jail, and two churches. In 1829, local merchant J M Goode built the first gristmill in Jeffersonton Township. The first store opened in 1830. By 1840, Jeffersontony had four churches and fifteen businesses. A school was started in 1847 and continued until it closed in 1954. In 1865, local entrepreneur John S Nicholson built the first courthouse inJefferson County The growth of Jefferson County slowed after 1870 when gold began to flow out of the ground at Comstock Lode near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Gold prospectors abandonedJefferson County for good after this discovery while other miners found more lucrative veins of ore near Lexington or Wheeling,. By 1922, however, many aspects of life in Jeffersontown had come to an end. A series of devastating fires destroyed most of the town's infrastructure, leaving it unable to continue functioning as an agricultural settlement.
