Jeffersontown is a town in and the county seat of Clay County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,472 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jefferson County area. The town was founded on October 26, 1825 by General Andrew Jackson as a result of his purchase of the land from major Campbell. The first courthouse was built in 1826. In 1827, Jeffersontown became an incorporated town with a government by elected officials. The first school building was erected in 1829 and served as the township's high school until it burned down in 1951. In 1830, commissioners voted to name the town for General Jackson himself, who had helped them build their first courthouse. In 1865, Jeffersontown became one of four towns in Clay County that seceded from Governor John Cotten's new state of Kentucky to form the new Bowling Green State Constitution Party government. On November 3rd 1865, General James Hogg led a force into Jeffersontown to intimidate local farmers into supporting Confederate President Abraham Lincoln during his "Emancipation Proclamation". American forces returned two days later and destroyed all but one building in town while leaving three people dead including Hogg himself; this event is known as "The Battle of Jeffersontown".[1] After Reconstruction ended following the American Civil War (1861-1865), many former slaves left Kentucky for Southern states such as Texas and Arkansas due to harsh labor laws which discriminated against freedmen and African Americans living within white-owned households. As a result of this migration, several small businesses were born around downtown Jeffersontown during this time including J&J Barber Shop (now Allstate Insurance) and Mr Discount Shoes & Sunglasses which continue today as PNC Bank & Trust Company Store #2B & Allstate Insurance Agency - still one of downtown's most prominent businesses despite multiple expansions throughout its years). Howeverpx even though many black men worked hard assembling these businesses over time they never received same level education or protection that their white counterparts did right out front like zoning laws were passed limiting African Americans' ability to own property or limited access to transportation after emancipation so these businesses could only thrive if they managed not make too much noise or spelled certain words incorrectly causing customers confusion about what type service they were getting - something that must have been very frustrating especially since tax payer dollars were being used up trying to help these business owners rather then giving back to those who truly needed it most like black people who actually constituted majority (if not all)of adult citizens in metropolitan Louisville at that point
