Jeffersontown is a small town in southern Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,059 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Scott County. Jeffersontown was founded in 1819 by fathers of the future Jeffersontown community, John and James Jefferys. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson's father-in-law, Colonel John Jefferys of North Carolina. The community first developed on the site of what is now downtown Jeffersontown. In 1830, a post office was established there, and by 1840 it had become one of the most important settlements in Scott County. At that time, it consisted of just ten dwellings and three stores. By 1860, however, Hugh Lawson McNaught had built a large frame courthouse and two other buildings inside the original town limits – making it one of the largest towns in Scott County. In 1870–71, when Louisville began to grow larger thanJeffersontown due to railroad development southward (the Louisville & Nashville Railroad reached its peak growth here between 1872 and 1880), many residents moved to Louisville or started new businesses in order to maintain close ties with their old home city. However, local farmers continued to prosper thanks to their fertile land and good water supply; within ten years of his arrival as mayor in 1892–93 – after purchasing much property eastof downtown from then-owner Samuel Gist – Mayor McNaught had rebuilt more than halfofJeffersontown's entire street grid on virgin limestone quarries north of downtown (making possible not only heavy maintenance but also periodic refurbishment/updating throughout its history). This occurred despite objections from some residents who saw this type OFdevelopment as an implicit invitation for other developers (easternsideoftown)to take advantageofJeffersonstown's lackadaisical civic leadership while they profited offthe helplessnessand resourcesof southeastern Jefferson Parish without contributing anything themselves! After less than 40 years as mayor – during which he ledoneofthemostprominentScottCountylocalgovernmentorganizationsduringthistimeperiod––Jim McMillin became(fora brief period)theFirstMayorOfJeffersonstownIn2006 followingthedeathofthedevelopmentofficialGregory Smith; duringthattimeperiodjeffersonstownalsobecame oneofthestateparishesinthesouthwestcoastal regionfollowingafederaljudicial ruling mandating such change!
