After Union soldiers burned down much of downtown in 1865, Jeffersontown grew rapidly as a cotton trading center until the early 20th century when its economy slumped due to lack of water resources and other problems. In 2000, Jeffersontown was designated a National Historic Landmark for its role in antebellum Kentucky history.
Jeffersontown was founded in 1817 by John Jeffers, a Kentucky planter. The town rapidly grew and became the county seat of Montgomery County, Kentucky. In 1854, the town was renamed for General Andrew Jackson and its residents were given the right to vote. The town experienced significant growth during the Civil War and Reconstruction period, becoming an important commercial center with whorehouses and gambling dens. Jeffersontown's population declined after the war and declining economy led to its demolition in the 1920s.
