Jeffersontown is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. Jeffersontown was founded by General David Jefferys and his family in 1818. The name comes from an Indian word meaning "place of meeting." The first post office in Jeffersontown was established on July 12, 1825, and remained open until it closed on December 15, 1925. The first store in Jeffersontown was opened on November 7, 1830 by Wm. Hargrave and later became the J & G Cook Store. A school was founded in 1837 by Reverend George Pullen with twelve students and two teachers. In 1870 a gristmill operated there for twenty years before being replaced by a more modern mill which continued to be used until 1984 when it stopped production because of lack of water supply. A new mill started operation in 2004 and continues to produce flour for local restaurants and businesses today. In 1860 General David Jefferys built a sawmill here which still operates today as one of the few remaining mills in Hardin County that still produces lumber products such as posts, beams and doors using power from an engine located outside of town on the property next to the high school football field (now known as Pritchett Park). After years of decline due to competition from larger mills within driving distance or cheaper imports (due primarily to prohibition), the mill reopened in 1984 after having been converted into an all-electric facility producing both lumber products and energy for use within town limits since then; however production has recently ceased due to dwindling resources which have been met through renewable energy sources like solar panels installed on the mill building). Today's downtown business district began taking shape around this late 19th century predecessor when some longtime residents purchased or renovated buildings including: First Baptist Church (built 1865), Masonic Temple (built 1902), Post Office & Armory Building ( Built 1907 ), Mrs Johnnie's Flowers Shop ( Built 1909 ), Laundry District No 3 (Built 1932) This revitalization project also included initial construction of civic center/pool hall/multi-purpose hall adjacent to First Baptist Church which opened in 1935; along with additions such as: CourierMail Arena - now home to Louisville Slugger baseball games - multi-purpose room/school gymnasium complex serving elementary through high school students across multiple grades levels; extensive street tree planting program completed between 2005-'10complete; adult education classes inside municipal building available during weekdays only Additionally much infrastructure development occurred during early 21st century period including: addition of new schools bricklayer shop/mechanic shed + 2 classrooms; replacement of aging water main system
