Jeffersontown is a town in Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,664 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jeffersontown was founded by pioneers in 1782. The first store in the town was built on Main Street. In 1827, the General Assembly created Jeffersontown Township and named it for Colonel James Jefferson who had served as a general in the American Revolutionary War and as an officer in the states of Virginia and Kentucky. Jefferson County courthouse (now known as "Old Stagecoach" courthouse) was built in 1893 and has been used continuously since that time. The building has been significant because it is one of only two county courthouses still standing from before Prohibition ended alcohol sales in America on November 8, 1920. The town post office was established on February 12, 1829, and continued to serve until it closed on October 20, 1907. In 1903-04, local citizens vote to erect a gun tower at Town Hall to protect residents from being mugged or abducted while walking their dogs outside during daylight hours. The tower still stands today and can be seen from many areas of the town
