The town was founded by settlers in 1853 and began to grow rapidly after the opening of the railroad in that year. By 1865, the population had reached 2,000 people and Gun Lights became a popular tourist attraction. The first gun lights were made out of metal and plastic and were used for show purposes. They were often attached to trees or poles in order to provide a lighted display. One of the most famous gun lights from Jeffersontown was called the “Light of Life” and it was built by Elisha Sikes. It featured an automated light system that could be controlled from a distance. The Light of Life attracted attention from all over America and it was even awarded an award by President Abraham Lincoln. The popularity of gun lights continued through the 19th century and into the 20th century. However, during World War II, many local businesses decided to stop production due to the high demand for military rifles. However, Gun Lights managed to continue manufacturing until 1949 when they finally went out of business. Today, Gun Lights are still very popular in Jeffersontown and they are often used as part of displays at local businesses or as part of history lessons about this important community

In 1860, when Jefferson County became a state of Kentucky, it organized as a town and named it after nearbyJefferson Barracks—the largest military installation at that time in central Kentucky. In 1865, when Louisville began to grow rapidly as an important transportation hub on the Ohio River, Jeffersontown became one of its many outposts along that route. By 1870, however, only 100 people lived there; most had gone to Louisville or other cities along the river for work.
