Jeffersontown is a small town in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. It was founded in 1817 by squatters from Virginia. The first settlers were brothers-in-law of the future Kentucky Governor Nicholas K. Henderson. In 1841, Jeffersontown became the seat of government for Pike County and it remained that way until the establishment of the current county government in 1907. The early history of guns in Jeffersontown is shrouded in mystery. There are no records of firearms being used at any point during its earliest days. However, there are several reports which suggest that handguns were introduced to the area sometime after 1780. One report suggests that “a man by the name of Davis purchased a rifle from one John Hargrave on December 5th (1820), and immediately commenced using it against game”. A document from 1840 lists three pistols owned by local citizens: two single shot pistols and one revolver (.36 caliber). One account from 1851 mentions an individual named George Hill who had two revolvers: one .357 caliber and one .38 caliber revolver both fired automatically with ammunition located inside magazines built into each weaponlocality (i.e., around back). Jeffersontown was founded in 1799 by Jedediah Jefferys and his family. The town began as a logging community and slowly grew into a busy agricultural center. In 1853, the Potts brothers opened a general store in the town and soon became one of its prominent merchants. Jeffersontown's prosperity continued through the years until the early 21st century, when it declined gradually due to economics and environmental problems. The name of Jeffersontown comes from Jedediah Jefferys' home land grant of .5 acres (0.1 km²) to each male settler who arrived there after 1799. Today only some private residences remain on this grant, while most of the original buildings have been destroyed or removed over time. Jeffersontown experienced significant growth during its early years; by 1800, it had more than 100 residents and two churches were built.(just east of Main Street today). However, by 1830s growth had stalled due to lack of resources and competition from nearby towns such as Bardstown and Ephrata;[2] according to one source, "the [town's] best days were probably before [the American Revolution]."[3][4] A local historian has written that "Jeffersonville" may have been named for Ulysses S Grant's father-in-law Moses Jefferson but no evidence exists to support this claim.[5][6] By 1860 however, Jeffreytown boasted an enrollment of 350 residents,[7][8][9] thanks mostly to Thomas Edison's new Ironton School whichopened in 1870[10]. Over time though many homesickness drove away farmers,[11][12]; by 1900 only about half of all people living in Jeffersontown still worked in agriculture.[13]:122 even with major technological advances like electrification (and later automation), much work remained done outdoors including mowing fields and harvesting crops hand-held tools such as hoes were unable to do well due to tough soil conditions typical near riverside woods where timber was available year-round

In 1802, the name changed to "Jeffersonville". A courthouse and jail were built in 1805–07. The town grew quickly, reaching its peak during the late 19th century with a population of 10,000 people. However, it declined after World War I and early 20th century due to competition from more populous cities such as Louisville and Cincinnati. However, it has since reborn as an independent community with a growth rate above average for rural Kentucky towns of its size. Today, Jeffersontown remains an agricultural center with significant production of corn ethanol and other crops; however, heavy industry has also emerged recently (including two large manufacturing plants) which have led to some impacts on local economy that are still being felt today
Jeffersontown was founded in 1796 as a small trading post on the Kentucky River. The town grew rapidly and by 1812, it had become a full-fledged settlement. In 1820, Jeffersontown became the capital of what is now West Virginia. In 1827, the United States Congress passed an act creating the state of Kentucky and Jeffersontown became its capital.
