Jeffersontown is a town in Gibson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,837 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1827 by farmers and traders from Yorktown, Virginia. Jeffersontown became a coal town during the 19th century because of its importance as a producer of coal for the anthracite coal mine in southern Appalachia. The town's main industry until the late 20th century was agriculture; today it still includes many small businesses catering to the local market. Jeffersontown is located on the confluence of two rivers, the Kanawha and Logansport Rivers. Jeffersontown is one of several towns in Gibson County that were founded during Kentucky's early settlement period; other communities include Clarksville and Mount Sterling. These Early Settlers had been brought overland from what is now Virginia by wagon trainloads or boats upon their arrival in what is now Gibson County on July 4, 1775 (the day of Lexington's Declaration of Independence). The first settler in Jeffersontown was James Nance who arrived with his family around 1787. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Nance's Ford". In 1827, Jno. & Wm Jennings bought land from James Nance and started farming there. A post office called Jeffersonton was established in 1828, but only served rural areas surrounding Yorktown until 1840 when it moved to Gibsonville which became the seat of government for all Gibson County except Hazard Township which remained unincorporated until 1915 when it became part of Jefferson Station (later renamed Mount Sterling). Lloyd Pickenbacker Sr., an American born miner who worked at Coal City Mine near Carbondale near Louisville before coming to Jeffersontown to start his own business tanning hides along with his three sons- Lloyd Jr., Harry and John - opened up shop here around 1886 becoming one of earliesttanneriesinKentuckyandoneofthelargestinthenationatthattimecateringtoallkindsoftanned hides including horsehideandbarnyardwarebeforeitclosedupin1902asaresultofabandonmentofthemineralsystembyRochester Tannery Companyalthoughstillwellknowninthecommunitytodayforitspumper truckswhichcomeintoplayduringrainstormswhendriversneedtopushtheshideworkaroundhome].In1892DrJohnWalsh set up DrJamesPickenbacker dispensary here dispensing medicine under the name "The John Walsh Clinic" which remains open today as One Stop Health Store #1 across from One Stop Health Store #2 next door across from Rogers Drug Store]. On November 3rd 1902 commissioners voted to change the name to "Jefferson Town" after Ulysses S Grant who had visited this area while campaigning for President that year and favorably mentioned it among other places he had inspected while touring Western Kentucky variously known at that time as Blairmore Mines (now White Sulphur Springs), Glenmorris Mines etc.). At that time there were only 9 residents living within 2 miles west of downtown whereupon they petitioned county officials asking them to re-name their community JeffersonTown so as not to duplicate efforts being made by neighboring communities such as Clarksville and Mount Sterling whose names had already been given away bylawtoothercommunities.(see map below) ). On November 16th 1907 we changed our name back again once more “Jefferson Town” effective immediately following passage by commissioners vote july 1st 1907 thru registrar’s office . . .
