Jeffersontown is a small, rural town in Johnson County, Kentucky, located about 25 miles south of Louisville. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1829 by John Jefferys and his wife Clarissa. The first store in Jeffersontown was opened by Elisha Stephenson in 1836. In 1839, the town had two hotels and twelve stores. The first gunsmith shop in Jeffersontown was operated by Rufus King and built on East Main Street. A post office was established here in 1840 and remained operational until 1907. In 1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman visited Jeffersontown and ordered all supplies for his army moved to Louisville because of the railroad construction going on nearby. In 1911, the United States Cavalry Regiment left Jefferson Barracks near Chicago for duty at Fort Knox, Kentucky as part of World War I. All members of the regiment were mustered into service with their firearms packed into shipping cases ready for shipment to Lexington where they would be used as cavalry scouts along with other armories across the state of Kentucky providing arms to law enforcement officers during prohibition days when alcohol was not allowed within certain limits The guns that made up these units were stored out of state until early 1917 when they finally arrived at Fort Knox where they were divided between cavalry squads assigned to patrol duty along with artillery pieces attached to several infantry battalions who manned trenches around the fortification during World War I After World War I ended there continued storage but also a limited production due to Prohibition which lasted until 1933 when it became an illegal operating industry

The land that would become Jeffersontown was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the early 17th century. In 1827, John Jeffersons founded a store and post office in what is now Jeffersontown. He named his community after his brother-in-law, James Jefferies, who had arrived from Scotland several years earlier with his family. When James died in 1827, John took over the business and continued to operate it until his death in 1858. The store became an important center for trade withinBullitt County and served as a nerve center for local politics and religion. In 1870, when Bullitt County was divided into two parts, Jeffersontown remaining within the new county while portions of Slaughtertown were transferred to Clarke County, Jeffersontown experienced some growth but ultimately declined during the late 19th century due to economic reasons such as population loss due to industrialization outside of nearby Louisville or because of competition from other towns near Jeffersonville (now Terre Haute). However, as early as 1909 there were reports that development plans were being made for the town again including building a high school and a courthouse which never materialized however some old buildings still stand today including the original Post Office which is on Main Street adjacent to the former Presbyterian Church (later Baptist) sanctuary on Second Street which also functions as an art gallery/museum today
