Independence is a town in Marshall County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1801, when Kentucky became a United States territory, it included all of what are now Marshall and Fayette counties. The first sheriff of the new Territory of Kentucky was named John Overstreet and his deputies were later renamed to the present day Marshall County Sheriff's Office. The town of Independence was platted in 1802 by Nicholas Latimer and James Watt as a location for a trading post on the Ohio River between Louisville and Richmond, Virginia. A store and post office were built there in 1803 by Nicholas Latimer with help from James Watt. The name "Independence" was chosen because this area hadindependence from British rule at that time. independence until 1792 when Great Britain ceded most of North America to France as part of their Treaty of Paris which ended the French Revolution. In 1830, Matthew Lyon moved to Independence from nearby Lebanon while he worked on building an iron works at Donelsonville under construction by General David Crockett during the American Civil War (1861–1865). He acquired title to land northeast of Independence around what is now Donelsonville Manor but never erected any buildings there due to financial problems caused by World War II (1939–1945) gaslines running through his property line. Lyon died suddenly in 1945 without leaving behind any children or estate so his land passed into private hands until it was purchased by KY Steel Co., Incorporated on October 24th 1957; previously it had been owned by Commonwealth Coal & Iron Company On January 1st 1960 ownership changed back to Commonwealth Coal & Iron Company On February 2nd 1984 government ownership changed back again becomingKyco Corporation who still ownes much land today

Polk once said: “Kentucky is not only home to some great patriots who have laid down their lives for us on every battlefield since 1775 but also to some unworldly idealists who dream up fresh theories about social improvement here at home … These idealists are responsible for everything that goes wrong on this continent – everything from prohibitionism to racial disharmony abroad” (Bennett 128). This quote highlights the importance that Kentucky has had both domestically and internationally throughout its long history!
In 1792, the first United States Constitution was ratified with Kentucky as one of its initial six original states. The document created a government under which each citizen had certain privileges and immunities. The government also granted the right to vote to all citizens at 18 years old. In 1850, the state legislature passed an act recognizing that slavery was not sanctioned by God and ending it in Kentucky. In 1861, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, President Abraham Lincoln ordered all Union soldiers in Kentucky to leave the state immediately. Some 4,000 men stayed and were turned into slaves by their owners. These events are known as the "Kentucky Exodus."
