French traders also discovered Kentucky during this time period and started trading goods along the Ohio River Valley including tobacco and other products with Native Americans in what is now West Virginia and eastern Maryland. However, English settlement began much more slowly than others due to lack of transportation options at that time acrossland travel being largely impractical given both river crossings as well as long distances between settlements/towns along routes such as the Appalachian Mountains or Chesapeake Bay Area (today’s Baltimore). Settlers did not arrive until after General George Washington’s crossing of the Potomac River into Virginia in 1776 giving us our first glimpse into what would become modern day Kentucky as we know it today! In 1790, the Kentucky General Assembly passed a resolution declaring Kentucky an independent state. The vote was 5 to 1 in favor of independence and on July 15, 1790, the new state became a separate country. The first president of Kentucky was James K. Polk.
