The land that now makes up Kentucky was first claimed by Native American nations and then purchased by European colonialists in the 16th century. By 1830, there were over 20 settlements in what is now Kentucky. The history of Independence can be divided into two periods: before and after the Civil War (1861-1865). Prior to 1861, Independence was a largely rural society with few industries outside agriculture or commerce. After 1865 however, as manufacturing increased across all sectors within Appalachia and other regions throughout America due to technological advances such as railroads and factories,[1] many smaller towns began tograsp opportunities in this burgeoning economy. As a result of these changes, many aspects of life within Independence changed during this time period including social mores; politics; culture; demographics; economic development; transportation; education; businesses; infrastructure and More![2][3] Although most people today would describe Independence as a staunchly Democratic stronghold,[4][5] it has been an open bastion for Republicans since its founding days[6][7][8] Indeed, most politicians who have represented parts or all of today’s Kentucky have come from either Republican or Democratic backgrounds.[9][10] However despite its partisan leanings (as well as some historical inaccuracies), Independence does play an important role in U.S.-Kentucky relations because it is home to both Mount Carmel College[11], one of only three private colleges located within each state boundaries,[12] as well as various military installations including Fort Knox which houses both US Army Reserve Command Headquarters[13] and US Air Force Bases at Whitley Point Naval Air Station adjacent to Louisville airport [14].
