In 1807, the first post office was established in Independence, and it served as the local center for mail transportation and delivery. Over time, more businesses cropped up in town, including a tailor shop and a millinery shop. In 1865, the first school in Independence was erected on Elm Street. It functioned as a primary school until 1907 when it became known as Independence High School. From this point on, Independence would become an important cultural center for eastern Kentucky. Numerous art exhibitions were held here throughout the 1920s and 30s; consequently, one can assume that this area had some significant visual impact on society at large. Additionally, many juries from around Eastern Kentucky convened here during these years to decide civil cases). Throughout these years, many additional technological advancements were made within the optics industry. For example, workers at The optician began using photographic plates to create negatives in 1892; this process allowed them to produce high-quality prints quickly and efficiently. Additionally, photography became increasingly popular within Northeastern Kentucky during this time period – so much so that photographers started opening their own stores all over town! By 1930, most of what is now known as downtown Independence had becomeestablished; however,. there remained a small but key section of business located on Elm Street where old timers stillcontinued to sell glasses and other optical products from generation to generation

Independence, Kentucky, is a town in the U.S. state of Kentucky and the county seat of Floyd County. The population was 9,724 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Cumberland River southeast of Louisville. The town was founded in 1795 by refugees from West Virginia who had fled to Kentucky during the American Revolution. The first settler in Independence was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1796. In 1802, Revolutionary War veteran George Rogers Clark moved to Independence and began trading goods with Indian traders before he discovered coal deposits near present-day Hazardville. He developed this coal into a successful business which he continued until his death in 1868. During its early years, Independence struggled to maintain its independence from Great Britain; it ratified a British treaty in 1796 but did not ratify another one until 1800 because it objected to British taxes without representation in Congress. However, by 1800 Independence had become an independent republic governed by elected officials and owned by its citizens rather than by Londoners or Scottish landlords as part of what became known as the "New Nation." In 1802, when Clark discovered gold nearby and decided to develop this land into a mining community (the first time westernKentucky had been explored), Independence joined forces with other eastern Kentucky counties to form the "Union Party" for pro-slavery reasons; this party lost both houses of Congress after the War of 1812 but regained power following Reconstruction under President Andrew Johnson (1865–1869). The Town Council voted unanimously to secede from Indiana on March 15th, 1861 after Confederate General Robert Ewell's invading army burned Indianapolis four days earlier whilemostofthetownwasoccupiedbysoldiersandtheirfamilies.(This event is also commemorated by an annual parade through downtown Indy.) In 1865 Union General Nathan Bedford Forrest set up his headquarters west of town and began planning an invasion of Kentucky that would coincide with Lincoln's 4th Of July speech giving notice that all slaves freed within 10 months were free under conditions specified therein (including having their owners'/holders' names recorded). On April 12th eastwest trains loaded with soldiers started leaving Lexington for what would be known as "The Invasion." After about two weeks initial skirmishes occurred along I-75 betweentownspeopleandtheConfederatesbeforeboth sides withdrew back towards Louisville where again sporadic skirmishing took place before finally withdrawing completely on May 6th just beyondpresent day Greeneville.(See map) On October 16th after several weeks Army troops landed at Paducah Harbor they proceeded inland towards Newport News where they camped for three days before moving onward against overwhelming odds culminating at Appomattox Court House where General Forrest surrendered effective November 11th.(See Map) Aftermath: As resultofThe Invasion approximately 30%ofthepopulationofKentuckywas killed or missing including most prominent men such as Generals Forrest and John Bell Hood while over 100 homes were destroyed including many churches and other buildings used by residents for civilian purposes such as schools etc... economicallyIndependence suffered greatly due primarily to high taxes levied on resources extracted from these lands plus general unrest caused throughout much of centralKY during Reconstruction period...due largely tooveralleconomic downturns beginning around 1920 area experienced continuing decline culminating with recent loss of jobs & population during 2000s recession

Independence is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to settle in what is now Independence was Nicholas Humphrey who arrived in 1681. He and his family built the original log cabin that still stands today on the corner of Main and Henderson Streets. In 1701, a group of men from Virginia led by Captain James Wilkinson came through Hardin County looking for land to purchase from the Cherokee Indians. They were not successful and returned home before too long. Captain Wilkinson's party found some grant land about two miles south of where Independence now stands and named it after themselves,independence Creek extending into Hardin County from this grant land. In 1837, John Caird bought 160 acres (6 square miles) east of present-day Independence for $10 per acre from David Wilcoxson in order to establish what would become Louisville Landing on the Cumberland River near modern day Georgetown University. This area became known as Caird's Landing because John Caird employed many local men to build his landing dock and wharf which is still standing today within walking distance of downtown Louisville. In 1845, General William Silliman laid out a township plan for Hardin County which included Independence as one of its townships. On July 10th, 1846, when hard times hit America following Civil War victory over Confederate forces at Gettysburg%, citizens of independence voted unanimously to secede from Kentucky Union and form their own independent state called "Independence" with its own government and flag! The new state had no legal validity until it ratified an official document - Declaration of Independence - on December 15th slavery surrendered unconditionally at Appomattox Court House! 1/9ths slave trade continued but black people were free so they started farms instead
In 1792, Kentucky became a state after the Declaration of Independence was ratified. The first governor of Kentucky, James K. Polk, was elected in 1849 and served until his death in 1850. In 1851, Abraham Lincoln was elected president and he won the state by a wide margin. On January 16, 1861, Confederate forces attacked Lexington and other important southern cities during the American Civil War. A total of 55 people were killed in this attack and thousands more were injured or displaced. The war lasted for two years and ended with Union victory on April 9th 1865.
