This left many people feeling Confederation had not been fair to them - especially since much of eastern Kentucky had been Tory heartland since before King James I owned it in 1692. This sentiment helped lead to the creation of the American Civil War and results such as Gettysburg are still felt today. Independence Day is celebrated annually in central KY on April 14th and is an unofficial holiday among some groups due to its long history as a landmark for independence movements throughout America.
In 1792, the United States of America was created as a result of the Treaty of Paris between France and Great Britain. The treaty ended the Seven Years' War and saw France cede Alsace-Lorraine to the United States, as well as all of Northern Italy to Spain. Kentucky was included in this new country, but remained part of British North America. The area that is now Kentucky was first settled by Native Americans, who were either hunted or gathered through trade with other parts of North America. By 1800, however, most of present-day Kentucky had been explored and claimed by European nations. In 1802, the US Congress passed an act granting land east of Ohio to Kentucky from Michigan Territory. This area would eventually become known as West Virginia. In 1812, when President James K. Polk signed the Act for Establishing a Provisional Government in Missouri (also known as the Proclamation), he called for elections in all US states except Louisiana which had not yet seceded from Mexico. On November 3rd, 1812 – three days after his inauguration – Polk issued a proclamation calling for election in all US states except Louisiana “to determine whether any portion thereof may be transferred to our own State” As a result of this proclamation and subsequent vote results on November 7th that demonstrated support for statehood for West Virginia (and other eastern territories), Polk announced on December 2nd that these territories would become full member states within the Union within two years under certain conditions: they must ratify an amendment to the Constitution allowing voting rights for citizens from slavery and free labor; and they must provide military assistance to participating Southern forces during The Mexican–American War (1846–48). These requirements were met with resistance from some western settlers who wanted nothing more than annexation by Canada or Mexico; however, ultimately these policies led to increased population growth in what is now Kentucky due to its status as part of newly minted US territory.
