It wasn't until 1802 when General James Ketchum convinced Congress to declare Kentucky an independent state based on its own merits rather than being given away like Louisiana had been. After much debate within Congress, Kentucky became an official US state on December 15th, 1802 - less than one year after she had seceded from Virginia! With independence came many challenges; including heavyoted taxes which hindered commerce along with increased competition from other regions seeking access to resources central to American growthsuch as lumber or slaves. However, overall Lexington/Frankfort area functioned relatively smoothly during this time frame with few major riots or social unrest taking place outside the larger cities such as Louisville or Cincinnati which housed much greater numbers of slaveholders at this point in American history
