The relocation process took more than a year and did not go smoothly; some people were killed while construction workers died from heat stroke working in relocated buildings. In 1931, when Coolidge decided against moving the capital again, violence erupted between protesters and police officers as thousands gathered outside City Hall. After several days of peaceful demonstrations, Mayor John Ahern called for a national day of mourning for all those lost during the relocation process. That same year sawthe opening of Independence Day stores which helped support local businesses until World War II destroyed most downtown businesses including two movie theaters (the first located on Main Street) and five hotels (one on High Street). Downtown business resumes post-WWII although there has been little recent development due in part to lack of funding

In 1792, when the United States acquired what is now Kentucky from France, it included all of present-day Jackson County and most of easternedge of Knox County as well. The first Europeans to arrive in this area were French traders and missionaries who founded Fort Pitt on the Misery River in 1795. By 1803, much of present-day Jackson and Knox counties had been acquired by the United States. As part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, America received land that extended into modern-day Kentucky from Spain. This gave new life to claims by certain Native Americans that they had always occupied this area. The First Treaty of Paris ceded these areas to the United States on January 14, 1815; however, many Cherokee people continued to resist Americanization even after having their land taken away. On February 15, 1792 – days before America's first congressional election – delegates from twenty-six states met at Louisville to create a new government for what was then known as British North America (now Canada). The delegates voted not to recognize French Canadian sovereignty over parts of present-day Kentucky and Tennessee because they felt this violated international law which guaranteed equal treatment for all nations involved in such a purchase. They also opposed any acquisition of additional territory without a formal vote by Congress since such an action would have placed them at odds with other countries within British North America which were seeking similar deals with France nonetheless! A resolution was passed requesting that Philadelphia provide transportation westward across Canada so that representatives could be sent back home and give their blessing before voting on final plans! This event marks oneofthe earliest steps towards creating our current form as a country – our Constitution was ratified two years later! Independence wasn't actually realized until 1800 when General James Wilkinson led an army through western Virginia ensuring eastward movement for settlers following the Louisiana Purchase combined with growing tensions between Great Britain and France over control of key West Indian islands (Mountain Home Key being among them). After successfully defending Washington Territory against pro-British forces during the Northwest Territories War (1789-1791), Wilkinson became commander-in-chief of all British forces in North America under George Washington's command. In 1794 he ordered General John Forbes to move his army northeast from Quebec City into what is now central Ohio along the lower Great Lakes region - thus beginning construction on Fort Necessity which would become an integral partof US military strategy throughout North America including its Afghanistan mission! In addition to providing security for American settlers during times when European governments were unable or unwilling to do so - fortifications like Fort Necessity helped contribute significantlyto territorial expansionism throughout much of 19th centuryNorthAmericaincluding AlaskaandArizona
