In 1787, Congress passed the Stamp Act which limited printing and circulation of paper currency within colonies without representation in Parliament; this act led to increased tensions between colonists and British authorities. In response to these tensions, several groups formed militias to resist British authority; these militias became known as "the revolutionary soldiers." On November 15th, 1788, John Brown attempted to attack aBritish military post near Harpers Ferry; this attempt failed but led to large-scale bloodshed between colonial rebels and British forces across North America that continues today as Memorial Day weekend events across America commemorate this history

The establishment of an independent state caused tension between slaveowners and non-slaveowners in Kentucky. For many years after secession, slavery remained legal in Kentucky while freedom had not yet been won for all slaves. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell planned to move his army into western Kentucky to free all slaves there before outbreak of war caused by Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. However, this plan was foiled by General Ulysses S Grant who advanced on Lexington with 10 thousand soldiers instead. The Civil War led to increased violence in eastern KY which characterized as "the Reconstruction Era". Many African Americans were forced into labor or sold into slavery during this time period because white men could not own them outright and needed their labor for warfare purposes or other economic endeavors (euphemistically called black Reconstruction). The end result of these occurrences is still being felt today among some descendants of those lost during Reconstruction–namely educational disparities continue within sections of Louisville neighborhoods despite laws mandating desegregation since 1954; African Americans are still more likely to be incarcerated than whites in eastern KY
The first organized settlement in what is now Kentucky was made by the French in 1686. The area that became today's Kentucky was part of Virginia until 1792, when it became a part of the United States of America. In 1801, the newly formed state of Kentucky was admitted to the Union as a result of the Treaty of Paris after the American Revolution.
