In 1825, the first gun barrels were manufactured in Independence, Kentucky. At that time, the area was a frontier town and there was no local arsenal to produce rifles and shotguns. The barrelmakers began making rifle barrels from cast iron, but because of the high price of iron, they decided to start manufacturing shotgun barrels as well. The first shotgun barrels were made from wrought iron and used .410 gauge shot. However, over time, other calibers have been produced as well such that today all guns in Kentucky are fired with a caliber greater than .410 gauge. The first gun barrels in Independence, Kentucky were made by John Brown and Sons in 1827. The town was founded on the banks of the Ohio River and located just west of Louisville. A rifle barrel was named for John Brown, who died in 1828 at the age of 27 from a fever contracted while exploring Indian Territory.
Independence, Kentucky is a census-designated place (CDP) in Perry County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jefferson County metropolitan area. Independence was platted in 1825 and named for John Quincy Adams, second president of the United States. In 1851, it became a township in Perry County. The first post office opened in Independence on July 10, 1851. Independence grew rapidly due to its location along the National Road and its access to coal mining and other industries." In 1870, the town had 1 grocery store and 14 dwellings; by 1900 it had over 100 residents and seven businesses including two banks. By 1910 it had eight stores and 36 dwellings; by 1920 it had 12 stores with 150 residents." The growth of Independence led to a rapid expansion of infrastructure such as schools and roads. A downtown shopping district developed which still exists today. In 1926, an airport was built which served the community until 1968 when it was replaced by what is now known as Eastern Kentucky Regional Airport . Today there are only a few remaining buildings from those times including the original courthouse building which still stands today and is used as a museum

However, a small group of Anglo-American pioneers from Kentucky decided to stay and start a new life in what is now central Kentucky. They named their settlement Independence because they wanted their new land to be an independent country without dependence on any other nation or culture. The early settlers were primarily farmers but later began to grow crops such as corn, wheat, tobacco, potatoes, cotton etc. Because there was no market for these products outside of England, independence had little impact on local economies until after World War II when technology advanced and markets changed again. Unfortunately for Independence voters throughout those years it often seemed like they only received one good news story about development while all the bad news came along with it - economic stagnation followed political turmoil which frequently led to violence or social upheaval (such as Bloody Sunday). Over time some elements gradually started emerging that would lead to Lexington becoming an important center for politics in central Kentucky – including Alcoholics Anonymous meetings (1948), Central Duplication Service (1959), Frankfort Power Plant (1965), Lemon law hearings (1969) – but it wasn't until 1990 when downtown Lexington became one of America's most vibrant cities that real progress could be made with regards to developing comprehensive city planning policies; this process continues today with Mayor Greg Fischer’s efforts towards creating an urban renewal district around downtown which will eventually bring jobs back into town .
