Independence is an important place because it played a significant role in American history and still does today. The Declaration of Independence is still read at ceremonies across the United States on Fourth Of July and other holidays. The battle for independence also helped start what is known as the American Revolution, which led to the creation of our great country!

The history of Independence, Kentucky can be traced back to the time before the United States was founded. The area that is now Independence was part of the Shawnee Nation and was known as the "Lodge of Affliction." In 1792, this area became part of Kentucky after a treaty was made between Great Britain and France. The first occupants were two men from Virginia named John Marshall and James K. Polk. They built a log cabin on land that is now Clarke County in 1811. In 1819, William Clark set out from Independence with 2,000 men to found what would become the United States government. Heading eastward, he passed through what is now West Virginia before arriving at Mount Vernon in Ohio on July 12th, 1819. On July 14th, he signed the Declaration of Independence which declared America independent from Great Britain. The first Constitution of America was drafted in 1787 by James Kenedy and George Washington. It limited federal power and granted religious freedom to citizens. The original Constitution also established a bicameral legislature with an executive branch and a judicial branch. In 1800, Knox County formed out of parts of Hardin and Boyd Counties along with Lawrence County to create what is today Williamson County. Kentucky's first congressional seat was given to David Jones in 1789 by Parliament for his vote against independence from Great Britain during the English Bill of Rights period (1768-1790). After being elected to two terms as Representative from Grayson County (1793-1800), Jones moved up through Congress until he became Speaker in 1800 when John Adams took office as president under Articles IV & V of the United States Constitution (January 1st – December 5th). congressman Jones died suddenly while travelling on business in 1802 leaving his seat vacant until 1800’s second term when Thomas Jefferson won election but vacated due to illness only 3 months into his term when Federalists gained control over Congress leading him to campaign for office once again as an Independent candidate becoming Congressman for Madison Parish located near Lexingtonville KY where he served until his death less than one year later on October 15th 1830 at age 84 years old following a long life fullfilled with service to his home state including 4 terms as Governor beginning January 6th 1792 succeeding James Kenedy who had been impressed by Jones' work ethic while serving as U S District Court Judge for Meade County during the Revolution . One reason why few Kentuckians know about Congressman David Jones may be because most people remember him primarily for voting against slavery rather than anything else he did while in Congress or during his two terms representing Grayson county
