The building of this road came as a significant victory for American forces because it made trade easier and allowed soldiers traveling between Kentucky and Mexico to avoid being kidnapped or taken prisoner by Indian chiefdoms. In 1802, America acquired Spain's claim to Mexican California which included parts of modern Texas and Arizona. Because California was under Spanish control at the time, American efforts began to boundary British Columbia (the portion of Canada that lay east of Quebec) along lines that would guarantee U.S.-Canadian superiority over Britain's Canadian possessions in North America during these times leading up to Manifest Destiny [the idea that America should become powerful enough so she could take on all competitors]. As part of this effort, General John Cranch ordered surveyors from Boston to explore possible boundaries for Oregon Territory which would include most or all present-day Oregon including Independence as well as parts of Idaho and Nevada today respectively. When news reached Washington D.C., President George Washington instructed his Secretary Of War James Ketchum not onlyto pursue this territory but also purchase land from its original inhabitants so American interests were immediately assured throughout much northwest North America[this policy known as "squatter sovereignty"][Ketchum responded by ordering his Deputy Commissioner Lewis Cass]).
