Hopkinsville is a small, unincorporated community in Breathitt County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1 at the 2000 census. It is located on the southern shore of Lake Barkley. The first white settlers in Hopkinsville were James Gentry and his family who came from Virginia in 1781. James had married Ann Hutchinson and theysettled on a farm southwest of Hopkinsville near present day Mays Landing. In 1801, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through Hopkinsville while marching south to Phenix City, Alabama and as a result many people mustered out of service here and some settled elsewhere within Breathitt County. In 1819, John Denton bought land northeast of Hopkinsville from Jno Hargrave for $1 million dollars which included what is now downtown Hopkinsville. Denton built the first courthouse in Kentucky which served until 1865 when it burned down. He also founded the college that bears his name today: University of Kentucky (now known as UK). On October 10, 1886 Hawkins & Company opened their new post office at 106 Main Street in what is now downtown Hopkinsville with mail service beginning on October 11th. At this time there were only two streets in town- one running north to south and the other running east to west- both named Main Street! When mail started being sent by train to Lexington then Louisville it was necessary for citizens to go into town and pick up their mail at Hawkins' store before travelling back home via the mainstreet route! This did not continue until after postal service was discontinued between those two cities about 1930 due to budget cuts! Today Hawkins' Store still stands just off of East Main Street across from Hopkinton Bus Terminal where you can pick up your local bus or train tickets!
