Hopkinsville, Kentucky is a small town located in Johnson County, Kentucky. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest community in Johnson County. Hopkinsville is home to the Hopkinsville Junior High School and the Hopkinsville Senior High School. The two high schools are part of the Highland Consolidated Education District which also includes nearby rural areas such as Beech Grove and White Hall. The first settlers in Hopkinsville were farmers who arrived from Virginia in 1785. They named their new town after George Washington's birthplace, Mount Vernon. At first, the settlers only raised corn and potatoes for their own use and sold what they produced. However, over time they started to build homes and sell property to other citizens of Johnson County. In 1824, they founded what became known as the "Hopkinsville Female Academy." This academy was designed to provide education for women living outside of Philadelphia at that time (the school operated until 1974). The first post office in Hopkinsville was established on October 16, 1827. It was called "Greene". On February 14, 1830, it was renamed "Hopkinsville". The first store opened in Hopkinsville on December 15, 1830 by Jno Bemis Sr., one of its early merchants. By 1840, there were 11 businesses operating in HopkinsVILLE including 3 stores by Fayette Taylor and 6 by James Witherspoon; a blacksmith shop; a mill; 3 gristmills; 2 sawmills; 5 shoemakers; 4 carpenters; 1 wagonwright; 1 cooperatives manufacturing shoes & apparel etc.; dance halls & theaters etc.; schools for girls & boys - Mrs E Hurden's Home School (now Greenfield Elementary) & Mrs Hurd's Day School (now Hopkinton Middle) In 1860 Richard Smeaton built Smeaton House which still stands today on Main Street near where he once lived with his wife Anna Maria Smeaton (& her sister Sarah) while he served as Sheriff of Johnson County from 1865-1867& again from 1870-1871 On November 12th 1870 local resident Johnnie Hodges shot an Indian trader named John Crouch while hunting game near present day Hawkinsboro off US 40 about 20 miles east of HopkinsVILLE

When it opened its doors for business, "The Gridiron" became a popular stop for customers traveling throughout Marshall County. In 1925, The Griggs family purchased "The Gridiron" and continue to operate it until they sold it in 1978 to Ivar Haglund who operated it until 1984 when it was taken over by Metroparks Associates Incorporated which operates it today as The Norris Place Hotel & Conference Center When World War II began, many Hopkinsvilles enlisted in the military or joined other patriotic organizations such as the Loyal Order of American Veterans (LOAV) or American Legion (). Several local industries were developed during World War II including machine shop production at US Steel Corp., aircraft manufacturing at Hendricks Manufacturing Company (), shipbuilding at Whitney Shipbuilding Corporation (), pharmacological research at Central Laboratories Corporation (), grocery store management () and tourism with visits by Franklin D Roosevelt () being among those activities promoted through various campaigns such as "Hood's Hope". In 1951, First Baptist Church moved into its new facility onMarket Square which remains today one of Hopkinsville's most enduring landmarks (). Many businesses closed during the recession but reopened within a few months because of government stimulus programs such as Job Corps and Perkins Coie LLP (). With job growth throughout Eastern Kentucky following 2003's economic expansion (), many residents decided to move out of their homes and into apartments or condos (). However, due to lack of housing units () and concerns about traffic congestion on Market Square (), First Baptist congregation has decided not to sell its land yet but maintain ownership rights so that they can continue providing worship services there .
