Hopkinsville is a small town in Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,191 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jefferson County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Hopkinsville community began as a post office on December 8, 1819, and was named for General John C. Hopkins (1795-1847), who had fought in the Mexican-American War and been commander of Fort Donelson in Tennessee. The present downtown area was built up around this time. Most of Hopkinsville's early development took place along what is now Main Street and its immediate vicinity because there was no rail line available to transport people or goods to and from the larger communities near Louisville and Lexington. This situation changed with the opening of the coming century when trains arrived regularly making Hopkinsville one of the most important localities in Jefferson County. One of America's first electric railways,the Louisville and Nashville Railroad (L&N) reached Hopkinsville in 1876 and quickly became one of Kentucky's leading transportation interests; it transported passengers, goods, minerals, lumber and even slaves across state lines during that era! In addition to its economic importance, L&N also served as a symbol of progressivism within Kentucky during this time period – harnessing new technologies while promoting creating an environment where entrepreneurs could thrive! In 1919 L&N merged with another railroad company called the Cincinnati & Indianapolis Railway to form the National Railway Company; this company soon abandoned all passenger operations after experiencing financial difficulties throughout much of its history! During World War II many businesses located near Hopkinsville did not turn out their lights due to wartime production restrictions; however many residents were able to maintain their homes by using Generator power for lighting needs! Hopkinsville is a small town in the Sequoyah County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington metropolitan area. Hopkinsville was founded in 1822 by John Hopkins and his brother-in-law Andrew Henderson. The first store opened in 1824. Henderson built a school in 1830 and it became the first high school in Hicks County. In 1868, local residents decided to change their name to Hopkinsville after General George Washington's home country of Virginia. The community grew rapidly and by 1870 had a population of 2,000 people. After a fire destroyed most of the buildings around 1880, Hopkinsville began to rebuild with private donations and government assistance. By 1890, Hopkintonville had become one of the largest towns in Sequoyah County with 3 stores and 15 homes. A new courthouse was built in 1911 and additions were made to it until it burned down on September 11th, 1965; this arson left Hopkinsville with only its three churches as assets remaining from that time until 1990 when they were replaced by a new courthouse which still stands today. The town experienced economic decline during the late 1960s through early 1970s due to decreases in manufacturing jobs along with an increase in Allentown Township's population concurrent with increased education opportunities for nearby students at nearby Allentown University (now Southern Illinois University Carbondale). This culture shift away from agriculture towards urban living caused large numbers ofHopkinsvillians to leave for greener pastures over subsequent decades; however some have returned since 2000 as retail businesses have redeveloped near Interstate 65 and other growth has resumed throughout downtown areas including artspace district
In 1847, a group of investors led by John Hopkins decided to establish a town in what is now Hopkinsville, Kentucky. The town was named after Admiral James Edward Cook who explored the eastern coast of North America during the 1790s. Cook's exploring parties had passed through this area on their way from Canada to Florida. The first building in the town was built by Major General Elijah Hopkins. The town grew quickly and soon there were businesses and homes . By 1859, the population had reached 2,000 people. The first post office was established in 1859 and within a few years, double-posting services were available so that residents could shop for goods both locally and farther away. Hopkinsville became an important transportation center because it offered easy access to two major highways: US 421 which ran through the town and then crossed over into Tennessee near Knoxville, and US 26 which connected Cincinnati with Louisville and other eastern cities. The arrival of railroadroads helped increase economic activity in Hopkinsville. By 1907, Hopkinsville had become one of the most important cities in Kentucky due to its location at the intersection of two major railroads
