In 1916, fire destroyed most of downtown but quickly rebuilt with help from local residents who donated materials and labor; this helped spark the growth of modern day infrastructure that still exists today including several large shopping malls, professional sports franchises (including Louisville Cardinals), multiple universities (including Xavier University & Kentucky State University), numerous churches/mosques/temples/,manufacturing plants/,and other businesses/.
