In 1865 David Barton founded Barton & Barton shoeshine shops and clothing stores which are still open today adjacent to their original location on Third Street west of Court Avenue. It wasn't until after World War II that Hopkinsville truly began to grow when many businesses were established such as WXK Radio (now Ion Television), Southern Bell Telephone Company (which later became Comcast), ABC-TV affiliate WQED-TV (channel 5) and Lockheed Martin Missile Systems Corporation (later Boeing). Many of these businesses remain active today including: WXK Radio; Southern Bell Telephone Company; ABC-TV affiliate WQED-TV; Lockheed Martin Missile Systems Corporation; and Barton & Barton Shoeshine Shops Incorporated
