This purchase also included a sawmill which was built soon after on Round Top Creek just north of present-day Ziegler Road (now Old Hickory Pike). In fact, many early businesses within the town center date back to this period including Wigwam's Tavern (later called White Horse), Kirby's Auctioneers & Mercers store (later called Hargrave's), Post Office (1837), Mr.'s Store (1850), Blacksmith Shop (1851), Carpenter Shop (1857), School House (1859) and several other small shops until it closed its doors for good in 1865 due to financial troubles brought on by Civil War shortages caused by price hikes resulting from newly imported goods being sold at higher prices than domestically produced items available at home. From its founding until 1830, Hopkinsville consisted only of a single room/ shack used for public services such as education and health care: a schoolhouse known locally as "Mr.'s Academy." However, with increasing enrollment throughout western Kentucky due to new gold discoveries adjacent to our region during this time period; more rooms/shacks were needed so that students could attend school together while living closer to their families rather than traveling long distances each day for educational opportunities outside their homes...the school gradually evolved into what we know today - an all around popular high school that offers diploma programs leading up to college/university degreeswaiverships/jobs! In addition to regular classes offered each day afternoon; there was also evening music lessons offered every weeknight from 6pm-8pm starting September 25th thru May 14th continuing thru July 31st !!! During those same years many talented young musicians would come through town playing various instruments often accompanying local singers...the sounds you'll hear coming out OF THE SCHOOLHOUSE door everyday during those days!!!
