By 1830, there were three sawmills operating in Hopkinsville: one by Drury Lumber Company president Isaac Noyes; one by Prentice Mulberry; and one by David Denny & Co.. In 1836, Englishman George Stephenson built his dam on the river at Hopkinstown for use as a water power source for his new locomotive factory at nearby Glasgow Plantation. This opened up much of eastern Kentucky to agriculture and development and led to increased trade between these regions. During the 1840s and 1850s, many citizens of Hopkinsville engaged in milling flour or rice on small lots around downtown or along major thoroughfares like High Street or Market Place. The first post office was established in 1848; it was located northwest of Main Street on what is now First Avenue. The early days of transportation through organized railroads were very important to this community as transportation brought goods closer to local markets while also providing job opportunities for those who worked at local mills and factories related to railroad construction or maintenance. Some notable individuals associated with Hopkinsville during this time include Benjamin Banneker (a signer of the Declaration of Independence), Wm Fenton (founder and first president of Nashville), Asa Gray (the founder/president/prime ministerof Canada), Alexander Graham Bell (creator of telephone technology), Andrew Carnegie (one of America's richest men) and Cyrus McCormick Jr., among others During World War II many homes within range of military installations were requisitioned for use as homeless encampments due to lack thereof available housing elsewhere in town; however all residents except some transient workers voluntarily vacated their dwellings within two weeks following mobilization began on September 15th 1944

In 1831, merchants Isaac Aiken and John Witherspoon erected a new store on State Street which became the nucleus of what became known as the "Old Town" of Hopkinsville. Development within the original town limits accelerated during the 1840s when new transportation links were made available through Henry Clay's purchase of land east of Hopkinsville from Andrew Jackson. This increase in development led to increased traffic and commercial interest which encouraged taverns, grocery stores and other businesses to locate within downtown streetscape boundaries that stretched along Second Street north to Fifth Street west and south to High Street east. By 1850, there were ten businesses located within one block of each other on Second or Third Streets downtown; these included three banks (the First National Bank of Louisville, Paine & Company), four printing establishments (465 poundspresses operated by Elisha Pinkney and Elijah Whitehill), two physicians' offices (Doctor Haywood Kerr and Doctor David Starr), five churches (First Baptist Church with its original sanctuary built in 1799 on State Street) including one dedicated to Scottish Riteasonry (!), six mercantile establishments including two dry goods stores/merchants stores (George Gales & Sons Store and Theophilus Parsons Store), four hotels/motels occupied by citizens throughout most or all years between 1849-1910 inclusive—theaddingAiken Hotel circa 1860-70—and thirteen schools classified as "pupil institutions." In 1850-51 industrial production reached $3 million with manufacturing being divided into three categories: nails, hatters' hats and shoes; this paralleled agricultural production which totaled $2 million that year according to US Census reports although it should be noted that economic data collected during Reconstruction indicate agricultureExpandedproductioninKentuckyduringthisperiodalthoughmanufacturing shrunk somewhat because many farmers abandoned their crops due to lack of markets for their products

However, during World War II Hopkinsville experienced economic decline as its economy shifted away from agriculture to manufacturing. During the 1970s and 1980s, however, Hopkinsville underwent significant redevelopment which has created new businesses and increased its population to over 25,000 today.
