Hopkinsville, Kentucky is a town located in the eastern part of the state of Kentucky. The population was 10,471 at the 2010 census. Hopkinsville is one of three towns in Breathitt County and is home to the Hopkinsville Museum of Art and History. The other two towns are Prineville and Paducah. The first permanent settler in Hopkinsville was John Swope, who arrived in 1799. He founded a trading post on the confluence of the Little Miami and Ohio Rivers. In 1814, Andrew Jackson became president and ordered all U.S. troops out of Kentucky, including Hopkinsville. Jackson then ordered Swope to leave his post because he considered it an insult that a Britishman should be governing America’s native land. In 1815, General James Hogg led an army against Native American rebels known as the Kanawa tribe near present-day Paducah Junction on the Ohio River Valley. After defeating these insurgents, Hogg built Fort Hays on what is now called Swope Street in Hopkinsville for military use against Indian nations throughout his career as Commander-in-Chief of United States Army West Tennessee Regiment from 1807 to 1828 inclusive. He also served as Mayor of Hopkinsville from 1830 until his death in 1840; he had been mayor since 1819 when it first appeared on city records . . In 1861, after Confederate forces burned down Union Brigadier General Edwin Muhlenberg’s headquarters at Lexington during Battle Of Bull Run (1861), many citizens took up arms against their occupying Federal Forces under Confederate general Braxton Bragg; most notably Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter (1820–1865) who joined forces with Confederate colonel John Nance Garner to lead a force numbering over 1,500 men into battle near Georgetown Court House just outside Indianapolis only to be driven back by Bragg’s superior numbers within minutes – an event which helped typify Porter’s reputation as “the last man standing” within Confederate ranks despite being outnumbered two-to-one numerically by Union forces at battles such as Second Manassas (Bull Run) The Battle Monument erected by citizens of Hopkinsville honoring Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter can still be seen today along Third Street between Park Avenue South and Glasgow Avenue North across from State Fairgrounds
The Hopkinsville community was founded in 1820 by the brothers Elijah and George Hopkins. The town was named for General John C. Campbell, who served as governor of Kentucky from 1818 to 1825. In 1830, the United States Army built a fortification in the town to protect it from Indian attack. In 1834, the first wagon train arrived in Hopkinsville from Illinois, bringing settlers and goods with them. The town grew rapidly, and by 1840 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1845, Hopkinsville became an incorporated city. By 1870, the city had reached its peak population size; it had 1,500 residents and boasted a variety of businesses and services. However, during the early years of the 20th century economic decline hit Hopkinsville hard: joblessness increased among its citizens, while violence rates rose sharply. However, thanks to progressive Mayor Augustus Fenton and City Council members including Alderman George Dorman and Councilwoman Sarah Henson (later Mrs. Abraham Lincoln), Hopkinsville bounced back during this time period and experienced significant growth throughout the 1920s into 1930s-1940s
