Hopkinsville is a city in and the county seat of Hopkins County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 24,735 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Hopkinsville was made on September 12, 1775 by Lieutenant Colonel James Robertson with his company of riflemen and eight horses under General John Forbes. The town was named for Captain William Hopkins (1727-1800), one of Forbes's officers. The city was founded on November 3, 1819 by Colonel Hiram Clark as Clarksville and changed its name to Hopkinsville on February 15, 1826 after General George Washington's visit to that region. The current form of the city was adopted on May 8, 1871 when it became the capital of Hopkins County after being chosen as the site for that purpose by a special election held in response to a request from Governor Andrew Johnson. In 1886, an international exposition were held in nearby Louisville and attracted over 100,000 people to Hopkinsville earning it the nickname "Exposition City." On July 4th 1893 local citizens ratified an ordinance giving their city its present name - Hopkinsville - following a referendum vote. In 1915 two bombs exploded near downtown Hopkinsville while American forces were training in France; these bombings left five dead and thirty-six injured including future Ulysses S Grant who had just joined up there at that time. This event led to much public attention given to crime rates in general during World War I which coincided with a drop in immigration due to anti-German sentiment across America at that time also stoked by President Wilson's call for neutrality throughout Europe during wartime tensions brewing between Austria-Hungary/Turkey and Germany Since then things have changed significantly within the city limits with growth taking place along both sides of US Route 64 just outside its boundaries making it difficult or even impossible for newcomers such as myself not only find work but affordable housing too often times resulting in high concentrations of poverty within some very tight neighborhoods especially east side/southwest corner areas like Forest Park/ Industrial west side streets like State Fairgrounds etc... All this has done little however to improve quality of life overall despite significant investment recently into various aspects such as comprehensive planning & zoning efforts addressing many key issues specific to each neighborhood which appears headed towards achieving stability through continued improvement over time including more open space presence throughout largest portion currently located eastside/southwest corner areas
