Hopkinsville is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hopkinsville was founded in 1825 by John C. Hopkins and his brother James G. Hopkins and named for General Edward Hethridge Hopkins, who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as governor of Kentucky from 1859 to 1861. The city's first post office opened on December 16, 1825, and its first settlers were George Mound and his family. In 1830, John C. Hopkins donated a land grant of . He also contributed $5 per acre to build a schoolhouse in the community which he named "Hopkinsville." Hopkins married Anna Widdowson; they had four children: James G., Josephine M., Margaret A., and John C.. The death of Anna Hopkins in 1848 led to increased immigration to Hawkinsville due to her husband's wealth; this caused some competition between the towns for tax revenues which helped grow their populations even further.. In 1860, President Abraham Lincoln appointed General Edward Hethridge Hopkins (John Most) as commander-in-chief of Union troops north of Mexico City; when General Hethridge's forces failed to take Mexican City after besieging it for three months during 1863–1864 without success), Lt.-General David Ewing ordered him relieved and replaced by General Alfred Terry Johnston on October 8th 1865 .. In 1870, Hawkinsville became one of twelve towns within Fayette County established as Responsible Government Townships under act No 2of 1870; these Townships were abolished by act No 3of 1877.. In 1880 & 1890 both local newspapers were published in Danville until moved back into Hawkinsville in 1903 when Fayette Electric Light Company bought them out.... After World War I new housing projects began filling up what used to be farmland but are now sections of Lexington suburbia...the population peaked at over 10,000 around 1950 before slowly declining since then..... With limited access to education or job opportunities outside Harrisonburg or Lebanon KY most residents have relocated away from Hawkinsville looking for more comfortable living conditions...... The company operated until 1979 when it merged with nearby American Tobacco Co.. American Tobacco Company operated several stores in Hopkinsville before its closing in 1997 due to bankruptcy In 1999, Valley Forge Investments LLC purchased American TobaccoCo.'s assets including about 60% of Hopkinsville Manufacturing Company for $10 million In 2001, Valley Forge Investments LLC sold most of its assets back to David DixonKnight which rebranded itself as Hicks & Dixon Incorporated . Hicks & Dixon continues to operate as an independent business today with operations located throughout Kentucky from Union City (Kentucky) through Prestonsburg (West Virginia) all the way up into Tennessee
