Henderson, Kentucky is a small town in the eastern part of the state of Kentucky. Henderson was founded in 1821 by Captain James K. Henderson and his wife, Nancy. The Henderson family remained in the town for over 150 years until their death in 1957. The first settlers to Henderson were Major Samuel Self and his brother-in-law, Peter Workman. They started out as tenants on land owned by Major John Sharp. In 1824, they purchased 2,000 acres of land from Sharp for $60 per acre. They named their new home "Henderson." In 1827, the Hardensons built a gristmill on their farm which became one of the oldest mills in Henderson County. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1902 but was rebuilt and still operates today. It is also worth noting that Nancy Henderson was instrumental in helping to found Mount Vernon University which sits on her farm today. Today, Henderson has a population of around 1,500 people who live primarily within its downtown area and its surrounding villages including Southside and Eastside Parkways. The schools that are located within town include: Hendrick High School; Patterson Middle School; Harding Middle School; and West Side Elementary School which serves students from grades PreK through 8th grade as well as PostKindergarten through 12th grade (formerly known as Highland Heights Elementary). There are also two churches located within town: First Baptist Church where services are held every Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., followed by Hillsboro United Methodist Church which meets every Wednesday night at 7 p.m..
