After purchasing 640 acres (250 hectares) of land around what is now downtown Henderson on February 11, 1834, General Washington Henderson gave it all away free of charge to anyone who desired it – making it one of the largest donations ever made to a municipality or community in Johnson County. This generosity soon led to increased development around what is now downtown Henderson with people moving into what would become their homes based on theiravorable location within walking distance of whatever they needed or wanted without having to leave their doorstep – something that still exists today despite occasional issues with zoning regulations which have allowed some property values to soar beyond what originally intended.) In 1861 when Confederate troops burned down Fort Donelson near present day Lexington, KY., General Washburne ordered all citizens of Unionville (founded near present day Lebanon) eastward across Mill Creek into eastern Johnson County so they could not support Confederate forces operating there - effectively kicking off one of the most bitter civil wars in America while taking innocent lives among both sides (the exact cause behind Fort Donelson's burning remains unknown).
